Community Service Day

Hi honors kids! I have a message for you from our lovely Community Chairperson, Holly McGuire! If you need more info about this honors event, Holly's email address is hmcguire@students.fairmontstate.edu!

Thanks!

Hey Everyone!

So as some of you may have already heard, National Honors Community Service Day is coming up on October 16, 2009. That day just so happens to be the day that The Soup Opera, a local soup kitchen, hands out free groceries. What we have planned is from 9am to 1pm we would like to have volunteers go to help hand out groceries, help to sort the donated clothes, or any other activities that could be done to help out. There are sign-up sheets in Dr. Baker's Office with all of the times available. Please let us know if you need a ride and we may be able to arrange transportation for you.

Thanks So Much Everyone!
Hope to see you there!

D.C. Trip 9/26

A few words from our president:

Honors Fleet!

I hope everyone's classes are rolling out smoothly. I wanted to remind everyone about the trip to Washington DC on September 26. That is a Saturday, and we will be leaving at 6:00 am. The bus is filling up rapidly, so please get your money to Dr. Baker as soon as possible to insure you have a seat on the bus. Remember the trip requires a $25.00 deposit for all honors students. If you would like to bring a non-honors friend, that's fine, but it will require a $25.00 fee. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

First meeting!

Hi honors kids, and welcome back to school! As many of you know, our first meeting of the year is coming up this coming week! Alexis, Meg & I all hope to see you Tuesday, September 1st at 12:30 in the Tower Room of Wallman Hall. There will be signs directing newcomers (or those of you who have just forgotten =)) to the room. Hope you all had a wonderful first week back to classes!

Back to School Luau!

The Honors Program has always taken time in the busy first week of school to celebrate the upcoming year. This year we are returning to a Luau theme! The event will take place at the Barbecue pit and volleyball area at the foot of Bryant Place.

There will be plenty of activities and contests including volleyball, limbo, hula hoop, and even water balloon dodgeball! Plan to bring a beach towel (to dry off with and use as a mat if you wish to sit in the lawn). There is even the possibility of a traditional fire poi show!

All Honors students are welcome to come. As we will be serving catered food, attendees need to decide if they wish to eat at the cafeteria OR eat at the Luau. Please write on the wall if you plan on eating at the Luau, as we need to have a list of names by next week.

Mentors, invite your mentees!

Good luck with the coming semester! We hope to see you all at the Luau!

Please RSVP either on the Facebook event (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=114973757766) or contact Reggie!

Congrats, Kiley & Justin!

My apologies for not posting this more quickly!

Honors kids:
We’d just like to take this moment to offer congratulations to Kiley Wilfong and Justin Cullen, senior architecture majors, on the publicity that they’ve recently received about their SURE grant. The duo has been working to make the Fairmont State campus more “green”. Honors students have traditionally been involved with grant projects at Fairmont State, and Kiley & Justin are very good role models for that practice. Kiley and Justin, we’re proud of you!

Below is the video that is found on the FSU website about their adventures with their project:

Here are some more links about what they’ve been up to:

They were also featured on the front page of the Times West Virginian. A clip of that story can be found at the newspaper’s website at: http://www.timeswv.com/local/local_story_204010156.html.

Fall French

Hi guys! Dr. Baker wanted me to let you all know that Molly Born will be working as both a TA and a French tutor for FREN 1101 in the fall. She would be happy to work with Honors students who sign up for the class so that they'll be prepared for the Honors trip to Paris over spring break. Talk to Dr. Baker or Molly for more details!

Hope you all are having wonderful summers!

(keep checking this blog for more information about upcoming Honors events for the fall semester and beyond!)

October Meeting Minutes

Fairmont State University
Honors Program Meeting
October 14, 2008

Reggie spoke about the parties in the Honors Lab. Food, videogames, and music will be there if anyone is interested. The next one will be held this Saturday, October 18th at 11am. The following parties will be posted on the facebook group.

The director’s talk for The Mandrake was held on October 16th at 6pm in room 126 of the Education building. Dr. O’Connor is the director and the show started at 7:30pm.

Quiz Bowl will be held on Saturday, November 15th. The competitors will be local high schools. We need people to sign up to volunteer for the following jobs: moderator, scorekeeper, timekeeper, and escort. If anyone is interested please let one of the officers or Daniel knows.

We took our honors picture for the yearbook at this meeting as well. Also, if you have any honors related pictures please send them to Jason or Dr. Baker.

The next honors meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 18 at 12:30 pm in the tower room of Wallman hall. This is third Tuesday of the month rather than the second. On the second Tuesday, Dr. Raquel Pinderhuges will be the next Honors Seminar Speaker.

The Honors Book Club has had a bit of a rocky start but the next meeting will be held on October 30 in the student lounge of the library. Time is TBA. The meeting will be 2 hours long. This can be used as a cultural event for Honors Seminar and everyone is encouraged to attend and discuss the book Nickel and Dimed. Let Jason know if anyone is interest in volunteering to lead one of the next discussions.

Dr. Ann Shaver, a professor of Psychology here at FSU and a clinical psychologist and counselor was our speaker for this meeting. She discussed the topic of emotional intelligence.

Remember: The next meeting is Tuesday, November 18th at 12:30.
